Kimberly C. Lau and Warshaw Burstein Title IX/College Discipline Group Release First-Ever Parent and Student Guides for K-12 and University Settings

03/15/2022
New York—March 14, 2022 –  Warshaw Burstein, LLP, a full-service law firm in New York City, today announced that Kimberly C. Lau and the Title IX/College Discipline Group have released two first-ever parent and student guides to navigate Title IX issues in university and K-12 settings. The guides answer frequently asked questions that Lau’s group receives from parents and students trying to understand what Title IX is, understand their rights under Title IX, and provide first steps on navigating a Title IX process.

The guides include an FAQ format, explain the Title IX process from the accused party and reporting party perspectives, and give specific advice to parents and students regarding what to expect if their child is involved in this process either as a student reporting sexual assault, or a student accused of sexual assault.

They are based on the 2020 Title IX regulations that are currently in effect and Ms. Lau’s broad-based experience in handling Title IX matters at both the K-12, post-secondary and graduate level.

"These guides will help parents and students better understand the Title IX related sexual assault issues that can arise in an educational setting, what their rights are, and what to do if they or their child reports a sexual assault or is accused of sexual assault on a university campus or in a K-12 setting," Ms. Lau said. "We hope these guides also will help to inform parents and students so that they are aware of these issues before going to college, and also serve as a resource if they must navigate this challenge for their families."
